CEO Welcome: Behind-the-Scenes Tour

Attendee Services, Exhibitor Showcase, Kierland Grand Ballroom, Lobby Level

All conferences are the same, right? WRONG!

Travel companies work hard to differentiate themselves and resist commoditization. PhoCusWright feels the same way about travel industry conferences. In fact, professional production is one of the six attributes that differentiate it from other travel events.

Step behind the scenes with PhoCusWright CEO, Philip Wolf, architect of the annually acclaimed PhoCusWright Conference. Although this event is best known for those taking the stage, the secret sauce lies in the unseen.

Join Philip on a private tour of the technology and people that make things come to life. From the speaker green room to the array of equipment, you experience the inner workings up close. Meet the dozens of professionals, including the producer and director, who orchestrate the special experience. Philip is known to share a few stories from the beginnings in 1994 as well.

The tour is limited to 50 people; book online.

Evolution of Hospitality Search Marketing: Social Commerce and Mobile Commerce Icon_small_film

#travelclick

Herberger Ballroom 1, Lower Level

Presented by: TRAVELCLICK
#travelclick
Now that social networks have bypassed Google as the top vehicle for search, the industry needs to revisit search marketing and what channels can best drive traffic and conversion. How can hotels compete in an environment dominated by user-generated content, viral video, and consumer reviews/comments across multiple channels? The addition of new social networking sites and mobile channels driving new e-commerce models is a game changer. This workshop addresses key issues that hoteliers must consider in the years ahead to compete and win in the new e-commerce environment, including:

  • What is the current state of search technology?
  • Which mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships will impact the future of social e-commerce and mobile commerce?
  • How are major search channels balancing the new challenges to improve coverage and relevance of their display results while maximizing advertising revenue?
  • How does emerging competition from metasearch engines and social media networks affect hoteliers' search strategy?
  • What can hotels do today to cost-effectively improve their search engine placement results, for both organic and paid listings?
  • How will the search marketing landscape shift in the next five years – and how can hoteliers prepare to compete in the new order of the digital world?

Harnessing The Irrational Consumer

#cartrawler

Greenway, Lower Level

Presented by: CarTrawler
#cartrawler
CarTrawler demonstrates how irrational patterns in the cognitive behavior of consumers can be harnessed to optimize the display – and consequently the conversion rates and revenue per customer – of a "business-as-usual" price led car rental website. The research in question has been developed at MIT and Duke University under the direction of world leaders in behavioral economics. CarTrawler demonstrates, using real life examples (and a few unfortunate guinea pigs), how it has developed the technology around these concepts within travel.

Compete shares updates to the proprietary analysis it presented at the 2009 PhoCusWright Conference. The 2009 version addressed consumer elasticity in the travel space by category, including identifying early indicators of the recovery. While everyone in the travel space had hoped that by 2010 they would be basking in the glow of recovery, at best consumers have sent mixed signals. This 2010 presentation updates the industry on the recovery indicators and offers insights on how to manage through the mixed signals.

With countless online destinations for travelers to share opinions and experiences, a marketer's distribution network can be a mere click away from these evolving engagement points. Attend to explore how social media, search, and email are affecting the travel industry and how to use them to drive marketing initiatives. Get answers to questions such as "Who are the fans and creators of user-generated travel content?" and "What can search tell us about consumer sentiment and travel issues?" Understand the search behavior within the purchasing funnel, learn to tailor email marketing campaigns to influence perception, and hear a case study presented by a leading online travel player demonstrating their search and social initiatives.

Mobile Web adoption is ramping up eight times faster than the desktop Web did in the 1990s. By 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common way to access the Web, driven predominantly by smartphone adoption. Devices like Nexus One, Droid, and the iPhone are powerful computers with eyes (camera), ears (microphones), voice (speakers), skin (touch screens), and location sensors (GPS). This changes the way users interact with their devices and with the Web. How can travel marketers embrace these developments and leverage the innovative, powerful, and intuitive advertising tools designed especially for the mobile platform?

Where Is Learning Today and Where Will It Be Tomorrow?

The travel, tourism, and hospitality industry is dynamic and complex – and the rules for success are in constant flux. Educating and training employees to be knowledgeable and proficient in their roles is more and more imperative as companies expand globally and technologically. There are myriad tools for training and assessment, but not every company has the same approach toward creating and procuring courseware and expanding learning programs. A first-ever survey by Brandon Hall Research and PhoCusWright Inc. will benchmark the priorities and plans of learning professionals in the travel, tourism, and hospitality marketplace – including trends on learning formats, outsourced vs. in-house development, LMSs, budgeting, courseware topics, and more.
